Psychiatry

 

Tine Van Bortel, PhD, FRSPH, FRSA is Professor of Global Health and Wellbeing, and a professional Mental Health Therapist, Mindfulness-based Mind Management trainer, and Wellbeing Coach.

 

Her main areas of interest and expertise encompass: Determinants of health; Global mental health; Health policy and systems strengthening; Planetary wellbeing and human health; Arts, heritage, nature and health; Sustainable community development and social inclusion; and addressing inequalities and inequities locally and globally.

 

Tine has worked with a wide range of stakeholders across different sectors and countries including grassroots organisations and communities, charities and businesses, health and care practitioners, and policymakers at all levels (including European Commission, World Health Organisation and United Nations). Her collaborative work has received funding from the Wellcome Trust, European Commission, Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), Medical Research Council (MRC), ELHRA (humanitarian response research), and others.

 

Previously completed applied research studies and advocacy work include, for instance: a large global mental health study incorporating 35 countries across 5 continents investigating stigma and discrimination of people with depression; Mental health policy development and systems strengthening studies in Asia, Africa and Europe; Mentally healthy workplaces (in collaboration with the World Health Organisation); a UK-wide ‘Coronavirus: mental health in the pandemic’ study (in partnership with the Mental Health Foundation); Primary Care provisions for internally displaced persons in Africa and Asia; Dementia care in UK prisons; Culturally appropriate health promotion; Climate and health; Arts, heritage and nature for mental wellbeing and social connectedness; and more applied health research, interventions and evaluation studies to inform policy, practice and advocacy at local and global level.

 

Prof Tine Van Bortel has also taught on several Global Health and Health & Wellbeing programmes, and has supervised numerous BSc, MSc and PhD students. She also co-delivers the annual Introduction to Qualitative Research Methods short course at the Institute for Research and Development for Health and Social Care (IRD) in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and supervises overseas Public Health trainees.   

 

Tine has a multidisciplinary background in Health Humanities, Social Sciences and Health, Global Health and Sustainable Development, Global Mental Health, and professional qualifications as a Mental Health Therapist, Mindfulness-based Mind-Management Trainer, and a Wellbeing Coach. She has a passion for nature and wildlife and for improving the health and wellbeing of people and planet.
