Studying in the Department
We currently have 60+ postgraduate students in the department.
Our students are hosted across all our different groups, engaging in diverse research, from genetics to psychology to neuroimaging and epidemiology. We are also actively involved in clinical teaching at the University of Cambridge and postgraduate teaching in various MPhil programs.
Postgraduate students contribute actively to the development and life of our Department. A number of our students are appointed as representatives on our Postgraduate Education Committee, ensuring our students are represented at the Department level.
Please get in touch for any general student enquiries not answered on these pages.
What we offer
We offer three programmes study here at the Department of Psychiatry:
- PhD in Psychiatry
- MPhil in Medical Sciences - Psychiatry (Research)
- MPhil in Foundations of Clinical Psychology (Taught) NEW FOR 2025!!!
Please note - our research degrees do not qualify you to become a psychiatrist. To become a psychiatrist in the UK, you must first qualify as a medical school doctor. This is followed by two foundation years (working in a range of specialities, including internal medicine and surgery), three years as a basic psychiatric trainee, and three years as a higher psychiatric trainee.
Having a Cambridge research degree can help you on your way to becoming a psychiatrist.
Postgraduate Open Days 2025
Our next Postgraduate Open Days will take place in autumn 2025. Details to follow.
During the Open Days, you can access webinars, videos and resources from departments and Colleges. These sessions and resources will help you to learn more about the courses on offer, hear from students about life as a postgraduate student at Cambridge, discover funding opportunities and explore the Colleges and other University facilities using the 360 photography and videos on the Virtual Tour.
We look forward to welcoming you!
